Spencer is a junior majoring in industrial engineering and minoring in digital forensics. He was born and raised in Carlsbad, California, a beach city in north San Diego County. More at home in the water than on land, Spencer’s first swim lesson came when he was 10 months old; he started snorkeling at age 5, surfing at 7, and SCUBA diving at 9. His summers were spent between beaches and burritos; without one or the other, he swears he would not survive. Away from the ocean, Spencer and his dad joined Indian Guides, a father-young son organization that provided him with his first real outdoors experiences, igniting a passion for camping and nature at an early age. Annual family camping trips to Yosemite Valley over Memorial Day weekend were a staple to his childhood, and each trip only enhanced his unbridled love for hiking and the outdoors.
Spencer played for the water polo and swim teams in high school, winning the San Diego County Championships in water polo his senior year. To round off his SoCal resumé, he underwent 8 days of rigorous physical and mental training to become a California State Beach Lifeguard after high school, a job he has worked the past three summers. Working as a lifeguard also gave Spencer the opportunity to work as an instructor for the Carlsbad Junior Lifeguard program, where he has worked as a camp counsellor with 9-14 year olds the past two summers. He likes to play acoustic guitar, and enjoys the musical stylings of John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix. You can find him chasing perfect waves and endless summers.
