Activity: Trail Restoration
Difficulty: Tough work - but anyone can do it!
This is our first volunteering trip of the semester! We are going to be spending the morning and a bit of the afternoon working with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council to help restore part of the backbone trail up at Newton Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains. We love going out and using these trails – so here’s a chance to give back! SMMTC is run by a few awesome old grandpas who we’ve worked with before. They let us use cool heavy-duty tools like McClouds and picks and loppers and have a wealth of knowledge about mountains in California.
We’ll work hard on the trail in the morning, take a lunch break, finish up the trail work, then explore the area with a short hike (there’s supposed to be a waterfall nearby – el niño permitting), and possibly snag some breakfast burritos before getting back to campus late Saturday afternoon.
Note: This trip is FREE because we love to help volunteering on the trails – but we do ask for a deposit that we refund after so we make sure no one bails!
Meet: Meet 7:00 am at Trogro (Starbucks under Birnkrant)
Return: Back to USC by 5:00pm on Saturday
Cost: FREE (with $10 deposit)
