Difficulty: Very strenuous
This is a once in a lifetime trip to the Lost Coast in Northern California, a piece of coastal wilderness so rugged that PCH had to be diverted inland. Backpacker magazine calls this one of the best hikes ever. Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Dorn recalled, “We saw storm-driven swells that were running five to six feet above the normal highest tide along with horizontal rain that made walking difficult. Stream crossings got so tricky that some of us came within inches of being swept out to sea. The Lost Coast might be the purest expression of solitude you can experience in the Lower 48, with sea breezes, mystical fogs, and cush campsites, to boot.” This trip will be a strenuous yet extremely rewarding experience. Good fitness and prior backpacking experience is recommended. It will be tiring, it will be wet, it will be an adventure; one you will not soon forget.
