Activity: Trail Restoration
Difficulty: Moderate (tough work, but anyone can do it)
This is our biggest volunteering trip of the semester! We are going to be spending the morning and a bit of the afternoon working with the Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council to help restore and build trails in Point Mugu State just North of Malibu. We love going out and using these trails – so here’s a chance to give back! SMMTC is run by some awesome old grandpas (and a couple mas) who we’ve worked with before. They let us use cool heavy-duty tools like McLeods (pronounced Mc–clouds) and picks and loppers and have a wealth of knowledge about mountains in California, strong opinions on politics, and are unafraid to dish it out.
But this is really cool because we are going during TRAIL DAYS!! Which means there are going to be tons of other groups there from other universities, the NPS, Sierra Club, mountain bikers, etc – so it is a cool way to meet people in all different parts of the larger outdoor community.
We’ll work hard on the trails in the morning, take a lunch break, finish up the trail work, and possibly snag some breakfast burritos and a little beach time before getting back to campus late Sunday afternoon.
Note: This trip is FREE because we love to help volunteering on the trails – but we do ask for a deposit that we refund after so we make sure no one bails!
Meet: Meet 6:30am outside Tro Gro.
Return: Back at USC by 5:00 pm
Cost: FREE!!! (But we have a $10 deposit)
